For the week that ended on December 9th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Despicable Me 3 debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The third entry in the distributor's animated Despicable Me series, this film proved a massive global hit. Yes, the picture scored mediocre critical plaudits (a Metacritic rating of 49%), but audiences didn't care, supporting Despicable Me 3 to the tune of an over-$1-billion worldwide gross on top of its estimated $80-million production budget. This week, Despicable Me 3 had a Blu-ray market share of 62%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Lionsgate Home Entertainment's American Assassin. A violent, R-rated franchise starter, American Assassin struggled to connect with both critics and audiences. The film garnered unenthusiastic critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 45%) and then grossed just over $36 million domestically on top of its estimated $33-million production budget. American Assassin had an HD market share of 56% and sold 18% as many Blu-rays and 20% as many total units as Despicable Me 3.

Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Spider-Man: Homecoming filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. This newly rebooted Spider-Man adventure proved a reliable critical and commercial success for both Sony and its partner Marvel. The film garnered solid critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 73%) and then went on to gross over $879 million worldwide on top of its estimated $175-million production budget. Homecoming had a strong HD market share of 72% and sold 11% as many Blu-rays as Despicable Me 3. On the overall package-media rankings, the film came in fourth place (behind Disney/Pixar's Cars 3), where it sold 10% as many total units as the Despicable Me sequel.
