Posted December 15, 2017 04:31 PM by Webmaster

U.S. label Vinegar Syndrome has announced its January batch of titles, which include Jamaa Fanaka's Penitentiary, A.C. Stephen's women-escape-from-prison sexploitation gem Fugitive Girls a.k.a. Five Loose Women, and Michel Levesque's Sweet Sugar, amongst others.

Penitentiary

Synopsis: Leon Issac Kennedy stars as Martel Gordone who, after unwittingly getting involved with a prostitute and attempting to save her from being assaulted by a John, which turns deadly, finds himself charged with a murder he didn't commit. Locked up in the state penitentiary, Martel is forced to fend for himself among hardened criminals, until he's introduced to the underground and lucrative world of in-prison boxing.

Director Jamaa Fanaka's breakout action hit, Penitentiary, remains one of the seminal late period 'Blaxploitation' films. Gritty, violent, and maddeningly entertaining, Vinegar Syndrome presents the Blu-ray debut of this genre film classic, newly restored in 4k from its original 35mm camera negative and filled with both all new and archival interviews with its cast and crew.

Fugitive Girls

Synopsis: Beautiful Sheila (Donna Young) is implicated in a fatal liquor store shooting committed by her boyfriend. Sent to an all-female work camp, she quickly finds herself at the mercy of four other violent and lust crazed prisoners who force her into their daring escape plan. Once on the outside, the five fugitives embark on a brutal and sex filled rampage across the countryside, while making their way to a mystery site rumored to have a buried suitcase full of money!

Director AC Stephen's most accomplished film, FUGITIVE GIRLS is a quick paced hybrid of action and sexploitation, which co-stars the beautiful Rene Bond and Tallie Cochran, and featuring a typically jaw-dropping screenplay from Ed Wood (who also appears in the film!). Long available only in poor quality bootlegs or heavily censored versions, Vinegar Syndrome brings this drive-in classic to Blu-ray totally uncut and uncensored and newly restored from its camera negative.

Lucifer's Women/Doctor Dracula

Synopsis: Acclaimed author, John Wainwright, has developed an interest in satanism and black magic. Hoping to manipulate him to suit his own perverse desire, Wainwright's publisher, Sir Stephen convinces him to perform the ultimate black rite: a human sacrifice. Selecting a beautiful burlesque dancer to be their victim, Wainwright begins having doubts about his beliefs, as Sir Stephen becomes more and more preoccupied with the black arts, and murder...

Directed by Paul Aratow (China Girl) and starring prolific stage performer Larry Hankin, as well as erotic film stars Paul Thomas and Clair Dia, Lucifer's Women is a slow burn study in satanic obsession, with black mass scenes supervised by Anton LaVey (founder of the Church of Satan). Never released on home video and long assumed lost, Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present the home video debut to this forgotten shocker, newly restored from recently unearthed negative elements. Also included is an all new restoration of Al Adamson's schizoid reworking of the film, titled Doctor Dracula.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • BRAND NEW 2K RESTORATION from 35mm negative elements
  • Audio Commentary track with Sam Sherman (producer of Doctor Dracula)

Sweet Sugar

Assigned a position on the notorious sugar cane gang, Sugar soon discovers that the plantation's owner, Dr. John, uses the prisoners in violent and diabolical experiments. Sugar may soon become another of his victims, that is, unless she can bust out first...

Director Michel Levesque's (Werewolves on Wheels) much sought after and over the top women-in-prison thriller, Sweet Sugar, is an action and violence packed exploitation classic, filled with blood, nudity, and a barrage of absurd twists. Long available in poor quality video transfers, Vinegar Syndrome is proud to bring Sweet Sugar to Blu-ray, newly restored from its 35mm interpositive.

Red Mob

Synopsis: Russia. 1992. The Soviet Union has fallen but there remains an unholy alliance between the mob and the KGB. Oleg, an Afghan war veteran, is running a survivalist summer camp when his son is taken hostage as retribution for his friend's refusal to lead a drug and gun smuggling caravan. With no other options to save his son, Oleg agrees to lead the caravan himself and is soon pitted against a siege of violence as he attempts to carry out his orders and live to see his son again.

Despite its early 90's production, Vsevolod Plotkin's Red Mob (Chtoby vyzhit) is staunchly situated in the stylistic tropes of late 80s action blockbusters. Helicopter dogfights, incredibly staged explosions, and death-defying action sequences abound, played against a tense and suspenseful story of survival.

Barely given a release outside of Russia, Red Mob played an important role in post-USSR Russian cinema, with much of its cast and crew continuing on to create the highly-successful NIGHT WATCH duology. Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents Red Mob on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world, newly restored from its 35mm Interpositive in both its Russian and slightly extended American version.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • NEW 2K RESTORATION from 35mm Interpositive
