For the week that ended on November 4th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
The Dark Tower debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This long-awaited, partial screen adaptation of Stephen King's cult sci-fi-Western-horror-fantasy series struggled to overcome bad buzz and a tortured production history. It earned low critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 34%) and didn't play much better with audience members, grossing just under
$51 million domestically on top of its estimated $60-million production budget. This week,
The Dark Tower had a Blu-ray market share of 58%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
War for the Planet of the Apes. The final installment in Fox's
rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy,
War for the Planet of the Apes struggled somewhat to connect with both critics and audiences. Despite earning strong critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 82%), the film didn't make the same impact on the larger viewing populace, grossing just under
$147 million domestically on top of its estimated $150-million production budget (in fairness, the film did better overseas, earning an additional $342 million in non-North American markets). On the Blu-ray-only list,
War for the Planet of the Apes had an HD market share of 53% and sold 78% as many Blu-rays as
The Dark Tower. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the third
Apes entry sold 85% as many total units as the Stephen King-inspired thriller.
Finally, Sony's
Spider-Man: Homecoming filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. The first entry in the newly rebooted
Spider-Man series,
Homecoming proved a reliable critical and commercial success for both Sony and its partner Marvel. The film garnered solid critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 73%) and then went on to gross over
$879 million worldwide on top of its estimated $175-million production budget.
Homecoming had a solid HD market share of 69% and sold 73% as many Blu-rays as
The Dark Tower and 62% as many total units.
