For the week that ended on October 7th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The newest entry in the popular
Pirates of the Caribbean series,
Dead Men Tell No Tales did not make the same critical and commercial impact as many of its predecessors. The film garnered low critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 39%) and then went on to gross
$172 million domestically on top of its estimated $230-million production budget (in fairness, the film did much better overseas, earning an additional $622 million in non-North American markets). This week,
Dead Men Tell No Tales had a very strong Blu-ray market share of 78%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Transformers: The Last Knight.Director Michael Bay's action extravaganza struggled to connect with viewers far more than the other features in the
Transformers franchise did. After its premiere last June, the film scored very poor critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 28%) and then went on to gross
$130 million domestically on top of its estimated $217-million production budget.
The Last Knight had a good HD market share of 65% and sold 82% as many Blu-rays as
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and 34% as many total units.
Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's release of
Wonder Woman filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. A standalone adventure designed to showcase Gal Gadot's Amazon warrior,
Wonder Woman quickly became Warner and DC's most beloved superhero fantasy since the release of Christopher Nolan's
Dark Knight Trilogy. After its premiere last June, the film scored good critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 76%) and then went on to gross
over $820 million worldwide on top of its estimated $149-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Wonder Woman had a solid HD market share of 62% and sold 24% as many Blu-rays as
Dead Men Tell No Tales. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the Warner/DC feature sold 30% as many total units as the latest
Pirates of the Caribbean installment.
