For the week that ended on September 30th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Transformers: The Last Knight debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director Michael Bay's latest action extravaganza struggled to connect with viewers far more than the other features in the
Transformers franchise did. After its premiere last June, the film scored very poor critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 28%) and then went on to gross
$130 million domestically on top of its estimated $217-million production budget. This week,
The Last Knight had a strong Blu-ray market share of 70%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's
Wonder Woman. A standalone adventure designed to showcase Gal Gadot's Amazon warrior,
Wonder Woman quickly became Warner and DC's most beloved superhero fantasy since the release of Christopher Nolan's
Dark Knight Trilogy. After its premiere last June, the film scored good critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 76%) and then went on to gross
over $820 million worldwide on top of its estimated $149-million production budget.
Wonder Woman had a solid HD market share of 66% and sold 81% as many Blu-rays as
The Last Knight and 87% as many total units.
Finally, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's release of
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The sequel to 2014's hit superhero adventure
Guardians of the Galaxy,
Vol. 2 proved a healthy success in its own right. Yes, the film mustered average critical notices (
a Metacritic rating of 67%), but it then grossed over
$862 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 had an impressive HD market share of 80% and sold 15% as many Blu-rays as
The Last Knight. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the Marvel sequel actually came in fifth place - behind Lionsgate's
47 Meters Down and Universal's
The Mummy - where it sold 13% as many total units as the
Transformers epic.
