For the week that ended on September 16th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
The Mummy debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The second installment in the studio's proposed "Dark Universe" franchise (the first being 2014's
Dracula Untold 4K),
The Mummy struggled to make much of an impact with critics and audiences. The film scored poor critical notices (a
Metacritic rating of 34%), and it didn't prove much more successful with audiences, grossing
$80 million domestically on top of its estimated $125-million production budget. This week,
The Mummy had a solid Blu-ray market share of 62%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was DreamWorks'
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. This adaptation of author Dav Pilkey's popular children-book series was a modest hit when it premiered last June. The film grossed just under
$74 million domestically on top of its $38-million production budget, and it got okay critical notices, generating a
Metacritic score of 69%. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Captain Underpants had an HD market share of 56% and sold 55% as many Blu-rays as
The Mummy. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the film sold 61% as many total units as the Tom Cruise-starring thriller.
Finally, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's release of
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. The sequel to 2014's hit superhero adventure
Guardians of the Galaxy,
Vol. 2 proved a healthy success in its own right. Yes, the film mustered average critical notices (
a Metacritic rating of 67%), but it then grossed over
$862 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million production budget.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 had a strong HD market share of 73% and sold 46% as many Blu-rays as
The Mummy sequel and 38% as many total units.
