For the week that ended on September 2nd, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The sequel to 2014's hit superhero adventure
Guardians of the Galaxy,
Vol. 2 proved a healthy success in its own right. While it only scored okay critical notices (
a Metacritic rating of 67%), it proved much more successful with audiences, grossing over
$862 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million production budget. This week,
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 had a very strong Blu-ray market share of 79%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Disney's
The Lion King. One of the most beloved animated films ever made,
The Lion King received a special "Signature Edition" Blu-ray this month: fitting treatment for a film that ultimately grossed over
$968 million worldwide on top of its $45-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Lion King had an HD market share of 75% and sold 55% as many Blu-rays as
Guardians of the Galaxy. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the film sold 57% as many total units as the
Guardians sequel.
Finally, Paramount Home Media Distribution's release of
Baywatch filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This raunchy comedy - an R-rated reboot of the infamous TV series - struggled to make much of an impact with viewers last summer.
Baywatch only mustered poor critical notices (a
37% score on Metacritic),
and its domestic haul wasn't much more impressive; the film
grossed $58 million domestically on top of its projected $69-million production budget.
Baywatch had an HD market share of 59% and sold 28% as many Blu-rays as the
Guardians of the Galaxy sequel and 37% as many total units.
