For the week that ended on August 26th, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 shot to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The sequel to 2014's hit superhero adventure
Guardians of the Galaxy,
Vol. 2 proved a healthy success in its own right. While it only scored okay critical notices (
a Metacritic rating of 67%), it proved much more successful with audiences, grossing over
$862 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million production budget. This week,
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 had a very strong Blu-ray market share of 83%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
Alien: Covenant debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. Director Ridley Scott's
Alien sequel AND
Prometheus prequel struggled to connect with American audiences this past May. The film scored average critical notices (
a Metacritic rating of 65%) and grossed
$74 million domestically on top of its estimated $97-million production budget, although it did perform better overseas, to the tune of an
additional $158.5-million foreign haul.
Alien: Covenant sold 9% as many Blu-rays as
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (and had a solid Blu-ray market share of 69%) and 10% as many total units.
Finally, Starz and Anchor Bay Home Entertainment's release of
The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This season of the zombie drama proved controversial for some of its violent twists, although it has remained consistent ratings in terms of AMC's most popular programs.
The Walking Dead had an HD market share of 42% and sold 3% as many Blu-rays as the
Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. On the overall package-media list, the film sold 5% as many total units as the Marvel feature.
