Blu-ray Sales, August 14-19: Alien Bursts Out Of The Charts

For the week that ended on August 19th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Alien: Covenant debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. Director Ridley Scott's Alien sequel AND Prometheus prequel struggled to connect with American audiences this past May. The film scored average critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 65%) and grossed $74 million domestically on top of its estimated $97-million production budget, although it did perform better overseas, to the tune of an additional $158.5-million foreign haul. This week, Alien: Covenant had a strong Blu-ray market share of 74%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart was Warner Home Entertainment's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. This gritty reimagining of the Arthurian legend was a critical and commercial flop this past May. The film scored low critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 41%, for example) and didn't connect that much more strongly with audiences, grossing $39 million domestically on top of its estimated $175-million production budget. On the Blu-ray rankings, King Arthur sold 14% as many Blu-rays as Alien: Covenant and had an HD market share of 52%. Regarding the overall package media rankings, the film ranked in third place (behind Disney's DVD-only release Descendants 2) and sold 20% as many total units as the Alien thriller.

Finally, Cinedigm Home Entertainment's Hickok filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales rankings. A western about legendary gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok, the film was released direct-to-home-media and, as such, hasn't made the same kind of critical or commercial impact as the other features in the top three. Hickok lacks a box-office total, and it only has a 49% Metacritic score, and one predicated off just four mainstream critical notices. Hickok had a very impressive HD market share of 90% and sold 14% as many Blu-rays as Alien: Covenant. On the overall package-media list, the film came in at eighth place, where it sold 11% as many total units as Covenant.
