Blu-ray Sales, July 31-August 5: Boss Baby Fires All Contenders

For the week that ended on August 5th, DreamWorks Home Entertainment's The Boss Baby remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This family-friendly animated comedy - which hinges on Alec Baldwin's work as the title character - was a modest success with critics and audiences last spring. While it garnered a mediocre Metacritic score of 50%, the film did then go on to gross over $497 million worldwide. This week, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 50%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart was Paramount Home Media Distribution's Ghost in the Shell. The long-awaited, live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's iconic manga, Ghost in the Shell quickly became controversial over the whitewashed casting of Scarlett Johansson as the main character, an issue that damaged its critical and commercial prospects at the box office. The film couldn't muster more than a 52% approval rating on Metacritic with critics, and it grossed $40.5 million domestically on top of its estimated $110-million production budget. On the Blu-ray rankings, Ghost in the Shell sold 44% as many Blu-rays as Boss Baby and had an HD market share of 66%. Regarding the overall package media rankings, the film ranked much lower - it landed in fifth place, with Warner's genial remake of Going in Style taking second place - and sold 10% as many total units as the DreamWorks picture.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Fate of the Furious filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking. The eighth installment in the wildly successful Fast & Furious franchise made a huge impact with audiences this spring. Despite netting mediocre critical notices (a Metacritic score of 56%), The Fate of the Furious grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $250-million production budget. The Fate of the Furious had an HD market share of 58% and sold 42% as many Blu-rays as Boss Baby. On the overall package-media list, the film came in at fourth place (behind Warner's Kong: Skull Island) and sold 26% as many total units as Boss Baby.
