For the week that ended on July 30th, DreamWorks Home Entertainment's
The Boss Baby debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This family-friendly animated comedy - which hinges on Alec Baldwin's work as the title character - was a modest success with critics and audiences last spring. While it garnered a mediocre Metacritic score of
50%, the film did then go on to
gross over $497 million worldwide. This week, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 55%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Ghost in the Shell. The long-awaited, live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's iconic manga,
Ghost in the Shell quickly became controversial over the whitewashed casting of Scarlett Johansson as the main character, an issue that damaged its critical and commercial prospects at the box office. The film couldn't muster more than
a 52% approval rating on Metacritic with critics, and it grossed
$40.5 million domestically on top of its estimated $110-million production budget. On the Blu-ray rankings,
Ghost in the Shell sold 54% as many Blu-rays as
Boss Baby and had a strong HD market share of 73%. Regarding the overall package media rankings, the film sold 41% as many total units as the DreamWorks picture.
Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's
Kong: Skull Island filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. A new attempt to reboot the giant-monster film genre, this action-adventure struggled to connect with critics and audiences last spring. It garnered mediocre critical notices (a Metacritic score of
62%) and
grossed over $168 million domestically on top of its estimated $185-million production budget.
Skull Island had an HD market share of 50% and sold 32% as many Blu-rays and 36% as many total units as
Boss Baby.
