Blu-ray Sales, July 3-9: Beauty Outcharms Power Rangers

For the week that ended on July 9th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Beauty and the Beast returned to the top of the Blu-ray-only sales list. This live-action remake of the iconic Disney animated classic was a huge hit with audiences this year. Beauty and the Beast might have scored only decent critical notices (a Metacritic score of 65%), but it went on to gross over $1.2 billion worldwide on top of its projected $160-million production budget. This week, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 60%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only media chart was Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Power Rangers. A semi-gritty modernization of the iconic children's program, Power Rangers struggled to make an impact with critics and audiences last March. Power Rangers scored low critical notices (vide its Metacritic score of 44%) and went on to gross $85 million domestically on top of its estimated $100-million production budget. On the Blu-ray rankings, Power Rangers sold 96% as many Blu-rays as Beauty and the Beast and had an HD market share of 54%. Regarding the overall package media rankings, this film actually came in first place, displacing Beauty and the Beast into second place (where it sold 92% as many total units as Power Rangers).

Finally, Summit and Lionsgate Home Entertainment's John Wick: Chapter 2 filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. The violent follow-up to the cult 2014 actioner John Wick, Chapter 2 proved even more enduring than its predecessor. John Wick: Chapter 2 scored solid critical notices (a Metacritic score of 75%) and then grossed over $166 million worldwide, a sum that seems modest but represents a rather sizable achievement for a medium-budget, R-rated thriller. John Wick: Chapter 2 had an HD market share of 58% and sold 62% as many Blu-rays as Beauty and the Beast and 59% as many total units as Power Rangers.
