For the week that ended on May 14th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Fifty Shades Darker debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only sales ranking. This adaptation of E.L. James' bestselling erotic novel - and the sequel to the 2015 hit Fifty Shades of Grey - netted Universal a decent profit despite terrible critical notices (a Metacritic score of 33%); Fifty Shades Darker grossed over $378 million worldwide on top of a $55-million budget. This week, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 58%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart was Lionsgate and Summit Home Entertainment's La La Land. Director Damien Chazelle's Hollywood musical premiered last year to rapturous critical and commercial success; the film grossed over $151 million domestically on top of an estimated $30-million production budget, and it also scored phenomenal critical notices (a 93% favorability rating on Metacritic), eventually winning Oscars for Best Original Score, Best Song, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Actress, and Best Director. La La Land sold 15% as many Blu-rays as Fifty Shades Darker and had a Blu-ray market share of 58%. Regarding the overall package-media list, La La Land came in at third place and sold 14% as many total units as Universal's erotic thriller.

Finally, another Universal title - the family dramedy A Dog's Purpose - filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. This surprisingly controversial feature proved a modest commercial success last January. It grossed over $188 million worldwide on top of an estimated $22-million production budget, and those earnings came despite mediocre critical notices (a 43% favorability rating on Metacritic). On the Blu-ray-only sales chart, A Dog's Purpose sold 14% as many Blu-rays as the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel (it also had a Blu-ray market share of 43%). And on the overall package-media chart, A Dog's Purpose came in second and sold 19% as many total units as Fifty Shades Darker.
