Blu-ray Sales, May 1-7: Rogue One Soars Over Dog's Purpose

For the week that ended on May 7th, Lucasfilm and Disney Home Entertainment's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story returned to the top of the Blu-ray-only sales ranking. A prequel to George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi classic, Rogue One continued the Star Wars franchise to fantastic success. The film grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of an estimated $200-million production budget, and it also scored decent critical notices (a 65% favorability rating on Metacritic). On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Rogue One had a strong Blu-ray market share of 72%.

However, it faced stiff competition from Universal Studios Home Entertainment's family dramedy A Dog's Purpose, which came in second on the Blu-ray-only list. This surprisingly controversial feature proved a modest commercial success last January; it grossed over $188 million worldwide on top of an estimated $22-million production budget, and those earnings came despite mediocre critical notices (a 43% favorability rating on Metacritic). On the Blu-ray-only sales chart, A Dog's Purpose barely came behind Rogue One, selling 97% as many Blu-rays as the Star Wars adventure (it also had a Blu-ray market share of 45%). And on the overall package-media chart, A Dog's Purpose topped the home-media sales, with Rogue One coming in second (it sold 64% as many total units as A Dog's Purpose).

Finally, Lionsgate and Summit Home Entertainment's La La Land filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales rankings. Director Damien Chazelle's Hollywood musical premiered last year to rapturous critical and commercial success; the film grossed over $151 million domestically on top of an estimated $30-million production budget, and it also scored phenomenal critical notices (a 93% favorability rating on Metacritic), eventually winning Oscars for Best Original Score, Best Song, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Actress, and Best Director. This week, La La Land sold 62% as many Blu-rays as Rogue One and had a Blu-ray market share of 53%. Regarding the overall package-media list, La La Land came in at fourth place (behind Underworld: Blood Wars) and sold 54% as many total units as A Dog's Purpose.
