Blu-ray Sales, April 24-30: La La Land Barely Dances Around Underworld

For the week that ended on April 30th, Lionsgate and Summit Home Entertainment's La La Land debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only sales ranking. Director Damien Chazelle's Hollywood musical premiered last year to rapturous critical and commercial success; the film grossed over $151 million domestically on top of an estimated $30-million production budget, and it also scored phenomenal critical notices (a 93% favorability rating on Metacritic), eventually winning Oscars for Best Original Score, Best Song, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Actress, and Best Director. This week, La La Land had a solid Blu-ray market share of 64%.

However, La La Land faced stiff competition in the form of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Underworld: Blood Wars, which was next on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The latest entry in the surprisingly enduring Underworld franchise, Blood Wars struggled to justify the series' continued existence. It only grossed about $30 million domestically on top of an estimated $35-million production budget, and it also managed poor critical notices to the tune of a 23% favorability rating on Metacritic. But give credit where credit's due: Blood Wars had a good home-media debut, selling 87% as many Blu-rays (and having a Blu-ray market share of 55%) as La La Land and actually outpacing the Academy Award-winning musical in terms of the overall package-media chart, where it debuted at number one (there, La La Land came in at second and sold 98% as many total units as Blood Wars).

Finally, Lucasfilm and Disney Home Entertainment's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales charts. A prequel to George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi classic, Rogue One continued the Star Wars franchise to fantastic success. The film grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of an estimated $200-million production budget, and it also scored decent critical notices (a 65% favorability rating on Metacritic). On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Rogue One sold 64% as many Blu-rays as La La Land and had a strong Blu-ray market share of 77%. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film sold 53% as many total units as Underworld: Blood Wars.
