Blu-ray Sales, February 13-19: Again Trolls Rise

For the week that ended on February 19th, DreamWorks Home Entertainment's Trolls remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. This animated adventure was a modest success with critics and audiences during its fall theatrical release. Its critical notices were okay (a 56% score on Metacritic), and it grossed just over $153 million domestically on top of its estimated $125-million production budget. This week, Trolls had a Blu-ray market share of 51%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists was Paramount Home Media Distribution's Arrival. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, this cerebral sci-fi drama was a major success for its distributor last fall. Arrival mustered a very strong Metacritic score of 81%, and that critical appreciation exists alongside good box-office earnings; the film grossed just under $197 million worldwide on top of its modest $47 million-production budget. Arrival sold 78% as many Blu-rays as Trolls (and had a Blu-ray market share of 61%) and 66% as many total units.

Finally, the new Signature Edition of Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Pinocchio filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only chart. One of the most celebrated motion pictures ever made, Pinocchio did not find universal acclaim following its release in 1940. The film was initially a box-office failure, with home video and a number of successful theatrical re-releases helping to cement the animated adventure's reputation as a modern classic. On the Blu-ray-only chart, Pinocchio sold 66% as many copies as Trolls and had a solid HD market share of 77%. Regarding the overall package-media list, the Disney favorite came in eighth place (Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween came in at third) and sold 8% as many total units as the DreamWorks feature
