Blu-ray Sales, February 6-12: Trolls Dominate the Home Media Charts

For the week that ended on February 12th, DreamWorks Home Entertainment's Trolls premiered at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. This animated adventure was a modest success with critics and audiences during its fall theatrical release. Its critical notices were okay (a 56% score on Metacritic), and it grossed just over $153 million domestically on top of its estimated $125-million production budget. This week, Trolls had a Blu-ray market share of 53%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales list was Warner Home Entertainment's Justice League Dark. Another in Warner and DC Animated's successful run of direct-to-home media superhero adventures, this R-rated thriller premiered this week at number two, presumably enjoying the synergistic boost from the recent theatrical release of The LEGO Batman Movie. On the Blu-ray-only chart, Justice League Dark sold 11% as many copies as Trolls and had a good HD market share of 69%. Regarding the overall package-media list, the Disney favorite came in third place (behind Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween at second) and sold 9% as many total units as the DreamWorks feature.

Finally, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back rounded out the top-three titles on the Blu-ray-only media ranking. A sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit Jack Reacher, Never Go Back struggled to connect with critics and audiences. Its critical notices were medicore (a 47% score on Metacritic), and it grossed just under $59 million domestically on top of its estimated $60-million production budget. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back sold 10% as many Blu-rays as Trolls (and had a Blu-ray market share of 62%), and on the overall package-media chart, the film came in fourth place and sold 8% as many total units as Trolls.
