Blu-ray Sales, December 19-25: Seven Are Magnificent on Home Media

For the week that ended on December 25th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's The Magnificent Seven premiered at the top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. A remake of the 1960 John Sturges classic, The Magnificent Seven was a modest success for the studio during its fall theatrical release. The film grossed more than $160 million globally on top of its estimated $90-million production budget, and it scored a Metacritic score of 54%. This week, The Magnificent Seven had a Blu-ray market share of 48%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales list was Warner Home Entertainment's Suicide Squad. The most recent entry in DC's live-action cinematic universe, Suicide Squad was a controversial success for the studio during its summer theatrical release. The film grossed more than $745 million globally on top of its estimated $175-million production budget, but it still struggled to find a decent critical reception (its Metacritic score is 40%). On the Blu-ray-only list, Suicide Squad sold 91% as many discs as The Magnificent Seven (and had a Blu-ray market share of 57%) and 76% as many total units.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Secret Life of Pets rounded out the top-three titles on the Blu-ray-only media ranking. This animated comedy was a big success for the studio during its summer theatrical release. The film grossed more than $875 million globally on top of its estimated $75-million production budget, and it also mustered a decent critical reception (its Metacritic score is 61%). On the Blu-ray-only list, The Secret Life of Pets sold 90% as many discs as The Magnificent Seven and had a Blu-ray market share of 53%. And regarding the overall package-media chart, Pets came in second place and sold 82% as many total units as Sony's Western.
