For the week that ended on December 18th, Warner Home Entertainment's
Suicide Squad premiered at the top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. The most recent entry in DC's live-action cinematic universe,
Suicide Squad was a controversial success for the studio during its summer theatrical release. The film
grossed more than $745 million globally on top of its estimated $175-million production budget, but it still struggled to find a decent critical reception (its
Metacritic score is 40%). This week,
Suicide Squad had a Blu-ray market share of 60%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and and overall package-media sales lists was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
The Secret Life of Pets. This animated comedy was a big success for the studio during its summer theatrical release. The film
grossed more than $875 million globally on top of its estimated $75-million production budget, and it also mustered a decent critical reception (its
Metacritic score is 61%). On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Secret Life of Pets sold 58% as many discs as
Suicide Squad and had a Blu-ray market share of 51%. And regarding the overall package-media chart,
Pets sold 68% as many total units as Universal's animated film.
Finally, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children rounded out the top-three titles on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. Director Tim Burton's adaptation of the popular Ransom Riggs YA novel had trouble connecting with both critics and audiences. To date, the film has gone on to
gross just under $87 million domestically on top of an estimated $110-million production budget, while its critical reception topped out at a
57% score on Metacritic). On the Blu-ray-only list,
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children sold 25% as many discs as
Suicide Squad (and had a Blu-ray market share of 47%) and 31% as many total units.
