French label Pathe will three new titles to its
Classiques collection: Milos Forman's
Valmont (1989), Raymond Rouleau's
The Crucible a.k.a.
Les sorcières de Salem (1957), and Marcel Carné's
The Gates of the Night a.k.a.
Les portes de la nuit (1946). The three releases will be available for purchase on March 29.
Valmont
In 18th-century France, a cruel and calculating playboy, Valmont, makes a malicious wager with the equally wicked Madame de Merteuil: Valmont must dishonor the married Madame de Tourvel bying with her. Synopsis: In Puritan Salem, Massachusetts, upstanding farmer John Proctor (Montand) is tempted by beautiful teenage boarder Abigail Williams (Demongeot), because his chilly wife, Elisabeth (Signoret), has begun to spurn his amorous attentions. When Elisabeth catches the lovers together and demands that Abigail leave their home, the tempestuous young girl exacts her revenge by accusing the woman of witchcraft.
