Blu-ray Sales, October 17-23: Independence Day Returns to Financial Success

For the week that ended on October 23rd, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Independence Day: Resurgence took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. The long-awaited sequel to the 1996 smash hit, Resurgence nonetheless had difficulties connecting with critics and audiences. This sci-fi adventure only grossed $103 million domestically on top of its estimated $165-million production budget, and its critical reception was even less impressive, given its Metacritic score of 32%. This week, Resurgence had a Blu-ray market share of 59%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists was Walt Disney Home Entertainment's fantasy sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass. Like Independence Day: Resurgence, Alice Through the Looking Glass was the follow-up to a far more successful feature, in this case Tim Burton's 2009 film Alice in Wonderland. Alice in Wonderland made over a billion dollars worldwide; Alice Through the Looking Glass, however, struggled to earn $300 million across the globe, and on top of a $170-million production budget. In addition, the film netted a low Metacritic grade of 34%. On the Blu-ray-only list, Alice Through the Looking Glass sold 53% as many discs as Independence Day: Resurgence and had a strong Blu-ray market share of 65%. And regarding the overall package-media chart, Alice sold 48% as many discs as the Independence Day sequel.

Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Ghostbusters rounded out the top-three titles on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This controversial remake of the 1984 comedy classic struggled to make a lasting impact with fans and critics. The horror comedy scored an average ranking of 60%, and it only grossed back $128 million domestically on top of its estimated $144 million-production budget. In terms of the Blu-ray-only list, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 44% and sold 33% as many Blu-rays as Independence Day: Resurgence. On the overall package-media chart, Ghostbusters sold 44% as many total units as Resurgence.
