Blu-ray Sales, October 4-9: Apocalypse Overtakes Warcraft

For the week that ended on October 9th, X-Men: Apocalypse went to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. The latest in the recent X-Men prequel trilogy, Apocalypse struggled to make it past mediocre critical and commercial receptions. The film netted a so-so Metacritic grade of 52% and only grossed $155 million domestically on top of its estimated $178-million production budget. This week, Apocalypse had a Blu-ray market share of 67%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales list was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's fantasy epic Warcraft. If X-Men: Apocalypse was a modest failure in North America, Warcraft (an adaptation of the popular video game) faced a far more dire situation. Not only did critics largely decry the finished feature (the film only managed a Metacritic grade of 32%), but the film was a box-office flop, earning just $47 million domestically on top of its $160-million production budget (that said, the film performed much better in international markets, grossing more than $386 million overseas alone). On the Blu-ray-only list, Warcraft sold 15% as many discs as X-Men: Apocalypse and had a Blu-ray market share of 65%. And regarding the overall package-media chart, Warcraft came in fourth place (behind both The Purge: Election Year and Central Intelligence) and sold 15% as many discs as the X-Men sequel.

Finally, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Beauty and the Beast rounded out the top-three titles on the Blu-ray-only ranking. This beloved animated favorite is enjoying its twenty-fifth anniversary, which began with a spate of critical and commercial praise. In 1991, the film grossed over $424 million worldwide on top of its estimated $25-million production budget, and it scored solid critical admiration as well, eventually nabbing an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. In terms of the Blu-ray-only list, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 100% and sold 14% as many Blu-rays as X-Men: Apocalypse. On the overall package-media chart, Beauty and the Beast fell to seventh place, selling 9% as many total units as X-Men.
