Blu-ray Sales, September 12-18: Civil War Divides the Charts

For the week that ended on September 18th, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Captain America: Civil War debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. The latest installment in the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, Civil War stands as one of 2016's biggest hits. In addition to its solid Metacritic score of 75%, the film has grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide on top of its $250-million production budget. This week, Civil War had a strong Blu-ray market share of 70%.

Next on the Blu-ray-only media chart was Walt Disney Home Entertainment's The Jungle Book. A live-action/CGI retelling of Rudyard Kipling's famous adventure tale AND the 1967 Disney classic, The Jungle Book was a huge hit with critics and audiences when it debuted last April. The Jungle Book grossed just over $964 million worldwide (on top of its estimated $175-million production budget), and it scored a good Metacritic grade of 77%. On the Blu-ray-only list, The Jungle Book sold 6% as many discs as Civil War and had a Blu-ray market share of 53%. Regarding the overall package-media chart, The Jungle Book came in third place - behind Warner's horror sequel The Conjuring 2 - and sold 8% as many total units as Civil War.

Finally,The Conjuring 2 rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This ghostly thriller - the sequel to the 2013 sleeper hit The Conjuring - was a decent-sized success when it debuted last June. The Conjuring 2 grossed just over $320 million worldwide (on top of its estimated $40-million production budget), and it scored a Metacritic grade of 65%. In terms of the Blu-ray-only list, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 41% and sold 6% as many Blu-rays as Civil War, and it sold 10% as many total units as Civil War from its second-place position on the overall package-media rankings.
