Blu-ray Sales, August 29-September 4: Viewers Open The Jungle Book

For the week that ended on September 4th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's The Jungle Book premiered at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. A live-action/CGI retelling of Rudyard Kipling's famous adventure tale AND the 1967 Disney classic, The Jungle Book was a huge hit with critics and audiences when it debuted last April. The Jungle Book grossed just over $964 million worldwide (on top of its estimated $175-million production budget), and it scored a solid Metacritic grade of 77%. This week, The Jungle Book had a strong Blu-ray market share of 63%.

Next on the Blu-ray-only media chart was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Huntsman: Winter's War. Simultaneously a prequel, side-quel, and sequel to 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Winter's War struggled to make an impact with critics and audiences when it debuted last April. Winter's War grossed just over $48 million domestically (on top of its estimated $115-million production budget), and it scored a Metacritic grade of 35%. On the Blu-ray-only list, Winter's War sold 13% as many discs as The Jungle Book and had a Blu-ray market share of 54%. Regarding the overall package-media chart, Winter's War came in third place - behind Warner's romantic drama Me Before You - and sold 15% as many total units as The Jungle Book.

Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's The Angry Birds Movie rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only media ranking. This animated comedy - an adaptation of the popular video game - was a modest success when it debuted last May. The Angry Birds Movie grossed just under $347 million worldwide (on top of its estimated $73-million production budget), and it scored a Metacritic grade of 43%. In terms of the Blu-ray-only list, The Angry Birds Movie had a Blu-ray market share of 49% and sold 8% as many Blu-rays as The Jungle Book. However, the film came in fourth place on the overall package-media list, where it sold 10% as many total units as The Jungle Book.
