Blu-ray Sales, August 15-21: Angry Birds Flies to Number One

For the week that ended on August 21st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's The Angry Birds Movie premiered at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This animated comedy - an adaptation of the popular video game - was a modest success when it debuted last May. The Angry Birds Movie grossed just under $347 million worldwide (on top of its estimated $73-million production budget), and it scored a Metacritic grade of 43%. This week, Angry Birds had a Blu-ray market share of 57%.

Next on the Blu-ray-only chart was Warner Home Entertainment's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The controversial sequel to the 2013 superhero picture Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice managed to find commercial success despite heavy critical pushback. Even those Dawn of Justice only mustered disappointing critical notices, as evinced by its 44% score on Metacritic, the film did gross over $872 million worldwide on top of its estimated $250-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list, Dawn of Justice sold 41% as many discs as The Angry Birds Movie and had a strong Blu-ray market share of 65%. Regarding the overall package-media chart, Dawn of Justice came in third place and sold 36% as many total units as Angry Birds.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's God's Not Dead 2 rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only media ranking. The sequel to the 2014's sleeper hit God's Not Dead, this faith-based drama didn't connect on the same commercial level as its predecessor did. God's Not Dead 2 garnered poor critical notices (its Metacritic score is 22%), and the public response only amounted to a $20-million domestic gross. In terms of the Blu-ray-only list, God's Not Dead 2 had a Blu-ray market share of 39% and sold 28% as many Blu-rays as The Angry Birds Movie. However, the film came in second place on the overall package-media list, where it sold 41% as many total units as Angry Birds.
