For the week that ended on August 14th, Warner Home Entertainment's
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took at the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists. This year's controversial sequel to the 2013 superhero picture
Man of Steel,
Dawn of Justice managed to find commercial success despite heavy critical pushback. Even those
Dawn of Justice only mustered disappointing critical notices, as evinced by its
44% score on Metacritic, the film did
gross over $872 million worldwide on top of its estimated $250-million production budget. This week,
Dawn of Justice had a Blu-ray market share of 58%.
Next on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was another Warner superhero title: the animated
Batman: The Killing Joke. Like
Dawn of Justice,
The Killing Joke too proved unexpectedly polarizing, building off Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's original graphic novel in ways that alienated some critics and viewers. This DTV feature drew the most ire, it seems, for its treatment of the Barbara Gordon character, especially in the new material that
Killing Joke adapter Brian Azzarello made in the film version's opening act. In terms of sales percentages,
The Killing Joke sold 49% as many Blu-rays as
Dawn of Justice (and had a Blu-ray market share of 55%) and 52% as many total units.
Finally, another animated movie - Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment's
Zootopia - rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This animated adventure - the latest from
Wreck-It Ralph director Rich Moore - was a box-office smash when it debuted last March.
Zootopia grossed just over $1 billion worldwide, and it scored a
respectable Metacritic score of 78%. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Zootopia sold 29% as many discs as
Dawn of Justice and had a Blu-ray market share of 43%. Regarding the overall package-media chart,
Zootopia sold 38% as many total units as
Dawn of Justice.
