For the week that ended on May 1st, Lucasfilm and Disney Home Entertainment's
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens returned to the top of the Blu-ray-only sales list. The latest installment in the iconic
Star Wars franchise made a huge commercial impact when it hit theaters last December.
The Force Awakens grossed over $2 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $245-million production budget, and it scored an
81% favorability rating on Metacritic. Furthermore, during its first week on home media,
The Force Awakens outsold its remaining nineteen Blu-ray and DVD competitors in the Top 20 VideoScan charts nearly five to one. This week,
The Force Awakens had a Blu-ray market share of 66%. However, on the overall package-media list,
The Force Awakens came in third place, selling 94% as many total units as that roster's number-one title, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
The Revenant.
Next on the Blu-ray-only media chart was, in fact,
The Revenant. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu's brutal survival drama netted its distributors both critical and commercial plaudits last year.
The Revenant grossed over $521 million worldwide on top of its estimated $135-million production budget, and it scored a
76% favorability rating on Metacritic, a rating that helped translate the film's success into three Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Revenant sold 80% as many discs as
The Force Awakens and had a Blu-ray market share of 49%.
Finally, Universal Studio Home Entertainment's
Ride Along 2 rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only and overall home-media rankings. Director Tim Story's follow-up to his
hit 2014 action-comedy,
Ride Along 2 netted all parties concerned a tidy profit. While the film had a mediocre critical show, garnering a low
Metacritic score of 32%, in North America the film grossed
about $90 million on top of its estimated $40-million production budget. Regarding the Blu-ray-only chart,
Ride Along 2 had a Blu-ray market share of 44% and sold 69% as many Blu-rays as
The Revenant. However, on the overall package-media ranking, the film came in second place where it sold 96% as many units as
The Revenant.
