To celebrate the Blu-ray and 4K UHD release of
The 5th Wave, Sony Pictures Home entertainment has sent us a replica of the backpack carried by Cassie Sullivan (Chloë Grace Moretz) in the movie. It's filled with several items that are critical to surviving an alien attack, or any disaster. Take a peek at what's inside, and look below to find out how to win!
While it may not be the
ideal "bug-out bag" (though conspicuousness is always plus), Sony and Cassie have put a couple of unquestionable essentials inside the Burton-branded backpack. It's a good quality bag, typical of the shape, size, and features one would find at a sporting goods store and carried down the hallowed halls of America's institutes of learning and, maybe someday, deep in the woods during a fight for survival.
According to the manufacturer, it measures 18.5in x 12in x 7in, weighs 1.5 pounds, and has a capacity of 21L. There are several zippered pockets, including a main section big enough to fit most anything one would need in a survival situation, such as a change of clothes, a survival guide, important papers, and of course the tools and supplies that come with the pack. There are other, smaller compartments ideal for carrying bottles of water, personal nicknacks, or spare ammunition.
Inside is a Sony press release announcing the movie's Blu-ray, DVD, and UHD release, but that's just a little fuel for the campfire. First amongst the goodies is a
The 5th Wave-branded soft-shell medical kit that includes several key essentials.
Included in the red and black kit is a triangular bandage, a cold pack, scissors, tape, plastic tongs, sanitary wipes, cleansers, and band-aids. It'll certainly help out with all the nicks and cuts one is sure to suffer during alien invasion.
Next is a flexible plastic water bottle with an attached carabiner to make it easy to connect to the backpack's exterior. It won't hold much water, and the pack doesn't include any water filters (a real shame), but Cassie can't have everything, can she?
Cassie can start a fire. No, the backpack doesn't include a
5th Wave-branded Zippo, but it does come with a flint and striker kit, courtesy of Bushcraft. It's also
The 5th Wave branded.
Maybe the coolest goodie in the bag is a multipurpose, crank-powered tool that features a flashlight with two adjustable settings, a phone charger, headphone jack, an alarm, and a radio tuner (which appears to pick up FM stations only) with a scan button, helpful in picking up any emergency broadcasts come end-of-the-world time.
The flashlight isn't going to give a Surefire a run for its money, but it needs no batteries and puts out enough light on either setting to be of use. Audio quality for the radio is expectedly crummy and reception is poor, but it should work well enough when it's needed. Brand is Leed's, and
The 5th Wave is emblazoned on the tool.
The bags are available to
buy from the manufacturer, but even better is that Blu-ray.com is giving away this very backpack, filled with all of the goodies, to one lucky reader! I'll also be including my personal copy of
The 5th Wave 1080p Blu-ray and filling the bag the rest of the way with some mystery BDs, including a couple of relatively new releases, for good measure.
