Upcoming Curzon Artificial Eye Releases

Independent British distributors Curzon Artificial Eye have informed us that they are planning to add a number of new titles to their catalog in Q3. Amongst them are Charlie Kaufman's first stop-motion film Anomalisa and Deniz Gamze Erguven's Mustang.

Anomalisa

From the mind of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) comes Anomalisa, a tender, touching and achingly funny black comedy, filmed entirely in breathtaking stop-motion animation.

Michael Stone, a husband, father and successful motivational speaker, is crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to a customer service convention in Cincinnati he checks into his hotel and prepares to once more go through the motions. But this time a chance meeting with Lisa, an unassuming baked goods sales rep from a small country town, throws the dullness into disarray and Michael feels he may have just met someone who can make a change...

Smart, humorously absurd and bracingly humane, Anomalisa is a technically stunning work of animation, beautifully orchestrated by co-director Duke Johnson and scored by Carter Burwell (Carol, In Bruges, Fargo). Drawing brilliant performances from David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason-Leigh and Tom Noonan it sees Charlie Kaufman at his daring, dazzling best.

Fire at Sea

Samuele is 12 years old and lives on an island in the middle of the sea. He goes to school, loves shooting his slingshot and going hunting. He likes land games, even though everything around him speaks of the sea and the men, women and children who try to cross it to get to his island. But his is not an island like the others, its name is Lampedusa and it is the most symbolic border of Europe, crossed by thousands of migrants in the last 20 years in search of freedom.

The Tale of Tales

Inspired by the celebrated fairytales by Giambattista Basile, Matteo Garrone's Tale of Tales is an epic vision of cinema. From the bitter quest of the Queen of Longtrellis (Salma Hayek) who forfeits the life of her husband (John C. Reilly), to two mysterious sisters who provoke the passion of the King of Strongcliff (Vincent Cassel), to the King of Highhills obsessed with a giant Flea (Toby Jones) leading to heartbreak for his young daughter, these stories weave the beautiful with the grotesque, creating a stunning and unique work of gothic imagination.

BLU-RAY STREET DATE: AUGUST 8.

Notes of Blindness

In 1983, after decades of steady deterioration, writer and academic John Hull became totally blind. To help him make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began keeping a diary on audiocassette. Over three years, he recorded over 16 hours of material, a unique testimony of loss, rebirth and renewal, excavating the interior world of blindness. Published in 1991, the diaries were described by author and neurologist Oliver Sacks as "a masterpiece... The most precise, deep and beautiful account of blindness I have ever read." Premiering at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, Notes on Blindness is a multi-platform project based on John's original audio recordings. The project includes a feature-length documentary and virtual reality project [see NotesOnBlindness.co.uk] released alongside the film.
