Blu-ray Sales, Mar. 29-Apr. 3: Hateful Eight Outguns Hunger Games

For the week that ended on April 3rd, Starz and the Weinstein Company's The Hateful Eight went to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino's controversial Western struggled to make the same critical and commercial impact that his successful 2012 Django Unchained left. The Hateful Eight only grossed $154 million worldwide on top of its estimated $44-million production budget, and it scored a 68% favorability rating on Metacritic. This week, The Hateful Eight had a Blu-ray market share of 55%.

Next on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Lionsgate Home Entertainment's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. This final installment in the Hunger Games franchise - and the direct continuation of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - netted its distributor a fairly robust profit last year. The film grossed about $281 million domestically on top of its estimated $160-million production budget, and it generated an unspectacular 65% Metacritic score. Mockingjay - Part 2 had a Blu-ray market share of 50% and sold 60% as many Blu-rays and 66% as many total units as The Hateful Eight.

Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's Point Break rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only media ranking. A remake of Academy Award-winner Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 cult classic, this new Point Break did little to distinguish itself commercially or critically. This action-adventure just grossed $28 million domestically on top of its estimated $105-million production budget, and it flopped with critics as well, scoring a 34% favorability rating on Metacritic. In terms of the Blu-ray-only rankings, Point Break had a Blu-ray market share of 41% and sold 19% as many Blu-rays as The Hateful Eight. Regarding its fifth-place standing on the overall package-media list - it came behind the Will Smith-starrer Concussion and the Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy's Home - Point Break sold 26% as many total units as The Hateful Eight.
