Sanyo Creates High Powered Blu-ray Laser

Sanyo Electric has developed a Blu-ray laser diode that can emit 450 milliwatts, which will allow for the burning of Blu-ray media at 12x speeds and at up to four layers (100GB). Sanyo made it clear, that while this laser has the ability to write to a four layer disc, the Blu-ray spec currently doesn't allows for such a disc, and that it would take many years before consumers would benefit fully from this technology.

However, write speeds have been ever-increasing since the format launched, and a 12x write speed may come sooner than later.

No products specifically using this laser diode have been announced.
