Independent U.S. distributor A24 has acquired the rights to Ben Wheatley's new film,
Free Fire (2016), starring Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, and Armie Hammer. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the film will open in theaters across the nation later this year.
Initially, Alchemy had signed a deal to distribute
Free Fire.
Wheatley's film is a period crime thriller set in Boston in 1978 and follows the bloody dispute between two rivaling gangs. The film is lensed by Laurie Rose, who also teamed up with Wheatley on
Kill List,
Sightseers,
A Field In England, and
Down Terrace.
Recently, Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, also acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Wheatley's highly anticipated futuristic thriller
High-Rise (2015), starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, James Purefoy, and Elisabeth Moss. The film will open in select theaters on April 28.
