For the week that ended on January 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Goosebumps went to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. This YA-horror feature - a semi-update of R.L. Stine's popular book series - was a modest success with both audiences and critics following its October release. In addition to grossing
over $134 million worldwide (on top of an estimated $58 million production budget),
Goosebumps received decent critical accolades, to the tune of
a 60% score on Metacritic. This past week,
Goosebumps had a Blu-ray market share of 46%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Straight Outta Compton. Director F. Gary Gray's hit NWA biopic was a big success with both audiences and critics following its October release. In addition to grossing
over $200 million worldwide (on top of an estimated $28 million production budget),
Straight Outta Compton received numerous critical accolades (it currently has
a 72% score on Metacritic), including an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, although many viewers have argued that the picture merited even more attention from the Oscars. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Straight Outta Compton had a Blu-ray market share of 52% and sold 65% as many Blu-rays as
Goosebumps while on the overall package-media list, the music docudrama came in fifth place and sold 57% as many total units as
Goosebumps.
Finally, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
The Martian rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director Ridley Scott's crowd-pleasing sci-fi adventure proved itself a big success with both audiences and critics following its October release. In addition to grossing
over $597 million worldwide (on top of an estimated $108 million production budget),
The Martian received numerous critical accolades (it currently has
an 80% score on Metacritic) which resulted in seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Visual Effects. On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Martian had a Blu-ray market share of 31% and sold 49% as many Blu-rays as
Goosebumps. However, on the overall package-media list, the Matt Damon-starring thriller came in second place and sold 72% as many total units as the kids-friendly horror adventure.
