For the week that ended on January 24th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Straight Outta Compton went to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. Director F. Gary Gray's hit NWA biopic was a big success with both audiences and critics following its October release. In addition to grossing
over $200 million worldwide (on top of an estimated $28 million production budget),
Straight Outta Compton received numerous critical accolades (it currently has
a 72% score on Metacritic), including an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, although many viewers have argued that the picture merited even more attention from the Oscars. This past week,
Straight Outta Compton had a Blu-ray market share of 59%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
The Martian. Director Ridley Scott's crowd-pleasing sci-fi adventure proved itself a big success with both audiences and critics following its October release. In addition to grossing
over $597 million worldwide (on top of an estimated $108 million production budget),
The Martian received numerous critical accolades (it currently has
an 80% score on Metacritic) which resulted in seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Visual Effects. On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Martian had a Blu-ray market share of 57% and sold 48% as many Blu-rays as
Straight Outta Compton while on the overall package-media list, the Matt Damon-starring thriller sold 50% as many total units as the rap-centric docudrama.
Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Hotel Transylvania 2 rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The sequel to Happy Madison and Genndy Tartakovsky's
2012 animated comedy,
Hotel Transylvania 2 was a hit for the studio this year. The
estimated-$80-million feature grossed over $467 million worldwide, but critics didn't find the film as engaging -
Hotel Transylvania 2 has a
Metacritic score of only 44%.
Hotel Transylvania 2 had a Blu-ray market share of 45% and sold 28% as many Blu-rays as
Straight Outta Compton and 38% as many total units.
