StudioCanal has revealed that it will bring to Blu-ray acclaimed director Hou Hsiao-hsien's latest film The Assassin (2015), starring Shu Qi, Chen Chang, and Satoshi Tsumabuki. The release will be available for purchase on May 23.
In addition to winning Best Director at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, The Assassin won the Cannes Soundtrack Award for Composer Giong Lim and was nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or. At the 2015 Golden Horse Film Festival, the film was nominated in 10 categories, taking home prizes for Best Director, Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup & Costume Design and Best Sound Effects.
The Assassin is Taiwan's submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.
Synopsis: Hsiao-hsien Hou directs this epic martial arts drama set during the Tang Dynasty. General's daughter Nie Yinniang (Qi Shu) is kidnapped by a nun who trains her in martial arts to become an assassin with the ability to take down corrupt local politicians. After failing in a task and displaying mercy, she is sent back to her home town to kill the man to whom she was promised, Tian Ji'an (Chen Chang), a cousin who leads the largest military region in North China. Nie Yinniang must confront her parents and memories after 13 years of exile while struggling with the order of the nun - kill the man she loves or depart forever from the way of the assassins.
