For the week that ended on January 17th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
The Martian went to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. Director Ridley Scott's crowd-pleasing sci-fi adventure proved itself a big success with both audiences and critics following its October release. In addition to grossing
over $597 million worldwide (on top of an estimated $108 million production budget),
The Martian received numerous critical accolades (it currently has
an 80% score on Metacritic) which resulted in seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Visual Effects. This past week,
The Martian had a Blu-ray market share of 59%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Hotel Transylvania 2. The sequel to Happy Madison and Genndy Tartakovsky's
2012 animated comedy,
Hotel Transylvania 2 was a hit for the studio this year. The
estimated-$80-million feature grossed over $467 million worldwide, but critics didn't find the film as engaging -
Hotel Transylvania 2 has a
Metacritic score of only 44%. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Hotel Transylvania 2 had a Blu-ray market share of 52% and sold 80% as many Blu-rays as
The Martian while on the overall package-media list, the animated comedy sold 92% as many total units as the Matt Damon-starring thriller.
Finally, Fox Home Entertainment's
Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI box set rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only sales list. This Original Trilogy package has long been a fixture on the home-media charts, and the recent box-office success of
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (if one doesn't account for inflation, then
The Force Awakens is now
the highest grossing film in the United States) can account for this Blu-ray package's high position this past week. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI had a Blu-ray market share of 100% and sold 10% as many Blu-rays as
The Martian. However, on the overall package-media list, the
Star Wars box set appeared in seventh place, with Lionsgate's acclaimed
Sicario taking third place and selling 10% as many total units as
The Martian.
