For the week that ended on January 10th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Sicario went to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. Director Denis Villeneuve's disturbing procedural proved itself an enduring favorite with both audiences and critics following its September release. The modestly budgeted feature (about
$30 million) has grossed over $80 million worldwide, while the film's critical accolades (it currently has
an 81% score on Metacritic) recently resulted in three Academy Award nominations, including Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. This past week,
Sicario had a Blu-ray market share of 52%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only media chart was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI box set. This Original Trilogy package has long been a fixture on the home-media charts, and the recent box-office success of
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (if one doesn't account for inflation, then
The Force Awakens is now
the highest grossing film in the United States) can account for this Blu-ray package's high position this past week. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI had a Blu-ray market share of 100% and sold 67% as many Blu-rays as
Sicario. However, on the overall package-media list, the
Star Wars box set appeared in sixth place, with Universal's found-footage thriller
The Visit taking second place and selling 52% as many total units as
Sicario.
Unsurprisingly, given all of the
Star Wars mania that is sweeping the planet, another
Force-related product took second place on the Blu-ray-only media chart: Fox's
Star Wars: Episodes I-III collection. Even with the relative critical drubbing George Lucas' prequel trilogy has faced in recent years, the renewed interest in the entire franchise has certainly bolstered this package's sales. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Star Wars: Episodes I-III had a Blu-ray market share of 100% and sold 47% as many Blu-rays as
Sicario. Regarding the overall package-media list, the prequel trilogy came in eighth place, with Sony's
War Room coming in third place and selling 48% as many total units as
Sicario.
