Blu-ray Sales, Dec. 21-27: Minions Retain Top Spot

For the week that ended on December 27th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Minions returned to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. A spinoff starring the sidekicks from the popular Despicable Me series, Minions was a runaway hit this past summer. This animated comedy garnered so-so critical notices (the film has a 56% score on Metacritic), but it grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $74-million production budget. This week, Minions had a Blu-ray market share of 48%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only media chart was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI box set. This Original Trilogy package has long been a fixture on the home-media charts, and the recent box-office success of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (it made over $1 billion worldwide faster than any other theatrical release) can account for this Blu-ray package's high position this past week. On the Blu-ray-only list, Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI had a Blu-ray market share of 100% and sold 66% as many Blu-rays as Minions. However, on the overall package-media list, the Star Wars box set appeared in sixth place, with Sony's faith-based drama War Room taking second place and selling 81% as many total units as Minions.

Finally, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The fifth installment in the popular Mission: Impossible franchise, Rogue Nation impressed both audiences and critics this past summer. Critics generally enjoyed the film (to the tune of a 75% score on Metacritic), and audiences responded strongly as well, given Rogue Nation's worldwide gross of $682 million. Regarding the Blu-ray-only ranking, Rogue Nation sold 49% as many discs as Minions (and had an HD market share of 64%). In terms of the overall package-media list, the film came in fourth place behind Disney and Pixar's Inside Out, which sold 48% as many total units as Minions.
