Today marks the Blu-ray releases of what are generally accepted as two of the best films ever made: 'The Godfather' and 'The Godfather Part II'. Released as part of '
The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration' Blu-ray box set, these films represent the pinnacle of American cinema and a product of historical significance. Of course, you probably knew that already.
What you may not know is how fortunate we are to be receiving such a magnificent set. For many years, prints of Coppola's masterpiece sat in a studio vault, damaged from years of abuse. It wasn't until director Steven Spielberg demanded that Paramount have the classic films restored that work began by film preservationist and Blu-ray.com friend Robert Harris to repair the first two films in the trilogy. We are now lucky enough to have the product of that painstaking restoration in high definition on Blu-ray.
One of the biggest summer surprises had to be the huge success of '
Sex and the City: The Movie', which comes out today on Blu-ray. Dreamworks is releasing two of their very successful animated titles in '
Shrek the Third' and '
Madagascar', while Warner releases the classic film '
L.A. Confidential' and the Johnny Depp film '
Blow' (one of my personal favorites from the actor).
And, if for some reason you don't go broke this week, next week sees the release of the summer blockbuster hit '
Iron Man'.
