Blu-ray Sales, Oct. 26-Nov. 1: Jurassic World Remains on Top

For the week that ended on November 1st, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Jurassic World remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. The latest installment in Universal and Steven Spielberg's hugely successful box-office franchise, Jurassic World is one of 2015's biggest hits. Despite only garnering average critical notices (the film has a 59% score on Metacritic), it grossed over $651 million domestically and $1.6 billion worldwide, totals that made it the highest grossing picture (so far) of the year. Furthermore, it's already distinguished itself on home-media platforms, earning $82.6 million in its first week on home-media - industry analysts have predicted that Jurassic World could become the highest-selling Blu-ray-and-DVD title of 2015, as well as the industry's biggest - full-stop - live-action Blu-ray title AND Universal's biggest digital release. This week, Jurassic World had a strong Blu-ray market share of 63%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Pixels. The latest comedy from Adam Sandler - the film is a kind of video-game-centric riff on Ghostbusters - Pixels struggled to connect with audiences last summer. The film only grossed $78 million worldwide on top of its $88-million production budget (although its worldwide earnings were much more robust at $164 million), and critics largely panned the film, a factor that contributed to its 27% score on Metacritic. Pixels had a Blu-ray market share of 46% and sold 24% as many Blu-rays as Jurassic World and 33% as many total units.

Finally, the Weinstein Company and Starz's Southpaw rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. This Jake Gyllenhaal-starring boxing drama was a modest success for its distributors last July. Despite its mediocre critical notices (it has a Metacritic score of 57%), the picture grossed $52 million domestically on top of its projected $30-million budget. Regarding the Blu-ray-only ranking, Southpaw sold 15% as many discs as Jurassic World (and had an HD market share of 49%). In terms of the overall package-media list, the film was at number four (behind Warner's Max) and sold 20% as many total units as the dinosaur-centric adventure.
