For the week that ended on October 18th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Aladdin premiered at the top of the Blu-ray-only sales list. A perennial favorite since its release in 1992, this animated adventure-comedy, with its great Robin Williams performance, made its long-awaited debut on North American Blu-ray platforms. The film was a smash success, grossing over
$504 million worldwide on top of its $28-million production budget in 1992; when adjusted for inflation, that total comes to about $855 million. This week,
Aladdin had a Blu-ray market share of 100%. On the overall package-media chart,
Aladdin came in second place, where it sold 74% as many total units as Warner Home Entertainment's
San Andreas.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only ranking was, in fact,
San Andreas. A big-budget modernization of the kind of disaster thriller that rose to prominence in the 1970s (
The Poseidon Adventure,
The Towering Inferno), the Dwayne Johnson-starring blockbuster was a modest success for the studio last summer; although its critical notices weren't great (it only has a
Metacritic score of 43%), the picture
grossed $155 million domestically on top of its projected $110-million budget. Regarding the Blu-ray-only ranking,
San Andreas sold 53% as many discs as
Aladdin (and had an HD market share of 40%). As noted previously, in terms of the overall package-media list, the film premiered at number one.
Finally, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Avengers: Age of Ultron rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. This sequel to
the 2012 smash hit was a large success when it premiered last May. Although it only garnered average critical support (the film currently has a
Metacritic score of 66%),
Age of Ultron quickly found great support among audiences,
grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide on top of a $250-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Age of Ultron sold 29% as many discs as
Aladdin and had an HD market share of 57%. On the overall package-media chart,
Age of Ultron came in fourth place -
Tomorrowland took the third-place slot - and sold 38% as many total units as the Disney classic.
