Blu-ray Sales, Oct. 5-11: Ultron Continues to Reign

For the week that ended on October 11th, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Avengers: Age of Ultron remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This sequel to the 2012 smash hit was a large success when it premiered last May. Although it only garnered average critical support (the film currently has a Metacritic score of 66%), Age of Ultron quickly found great support among audiences, grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide on top of a $250-million production budget. This week, Age of Ultron had a strong Blu-ray market share of 62%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only ranking was another sequel: Warner Home Entertainment's Magic Mike XXL. A follow-up to the 2012 sleeper hit Magic Mike, this XXL version didn't make as big an impact on the box-office last June as its predecessor. The sequel lacked the earlier feature's widespread critical support (it only has a Metacritic score of 60%), and while it grossed over $117 million worldwide on top of its $14.8-million production budget, the first Magic Mike earned over $167 million worldwide on a $7-million budget. Magic Mike XXL sold 13% as many Blu-rays as Age of Ultron (and had an HD market share of 27%) and 29% as many total units.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Universal's action extravaganza Furious 7 rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. The latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise quickly became one of the series' most successful entries. Despite its average critical notices (the film has a Metacritic score of 67%), Furious 7 grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide and has already set records on home-media platforms; during its first week of sales, the picture sold over 2.5 million units and made more than $52.5 million. On the Blu-ray-only list, Furious 7 sold 10% as many discs as Age of Ultron and had an HD market share of 50%. On the overall package-media chart, Furious 7 sold 13% as many total units as the Avengers follow-up.
