For the week that ended on October 4th, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Avengers: Age of Ultron was at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This sequel to
the 2012 smash hit was a large success when it premiered last May. Although it only garnered average critical support (the film currently has a
Metacritic score of 66%),
Age of Ultron quickly found great support among audiences,
grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide on top of a $250-million production budget. This week,
Age of Ultron had a strong Blu-ray market share of 63%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only ranking was Universal's action extravaganza
Furious 7. The latest installment in the
Fast & Furious franchise quickly became one of the series' most successful entries. Despite its average critical notices (the film has a
Metacritic score of 67%),
Furious 7 grossed over
$1.5 billion worldwide and has already set records on home-media platforms; during its first week of sales, the picture sold over
2.5 million units and made more than $52.5 million. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Furious 7 sold 16% as many discs as
Age of Ultron and had an HD market share of 52%. On the overall package-media chart,
Furious 7 came in fourth place - behind Paul Feig's
Spy and
Pitch Perfect 2 - sold 19% as many total units as the
Avengers follow-up.
Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Pitch Perfect 2 rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This sequel to
the 2012 sleeper hit was one of Summer 2015's biggest success stories. Although it only garnered so-so critical support (the film currently has a
Metacritic score of 63%),
Pitch Perfect 2 quickly found support among audiences,
grossing over $285 million worldwide (on top of a $29-million production budget) and even beating the weekly grosses of the likes of more aggressive summer blockbusters such as
Mad Max: Fury Road and
Age of Ultron.
Pitch Perfect 2 sold 14% as many Blu-rays as
Age of Ultron and 21% as many total units, and its Blu-ray market share was 41%.
