For the week that ended on August 9th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Insurgent took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists. An adaptation of the second book in Veronica Roth's popular
Divergent series, the picture continues the narrative started in the hit 2014 film
Divergent, although
Insurgent did not prove as successful as its predecessor. While it had a better worldwide box-office gross
($295 million vs. Divergent's $288 million), at $110 million it also cost about $25 million more to produce; the film also mustered disappointing critical notices, as evinced by its
42% score on Metacritic. This week,
Insurgent had a Blu-ray market share of 53%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was DreamWorks Home Entertainment's
Home. This CGI-animated comedy struggled to earn back its production budget for the studio last March. It garnered mediocre critical support (the film has a
55% rating on Metacritic) and grossed only
$176 million worldwide on top of its projected $135-million budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $209 million). On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Home sold 35% as many Blu-rays as
Insurgent (and had an HD market share of 36%) and 52% as many total units.
Ultimately, though, consumers proved loyal to the
Divergent brand; the number-three title on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was a double-feature bundle of
Insurgent and Divergent. On the Blu-ray-only list,
this Wal-Mart exclusive sold 13% as many copies as just
Insurgent by itself and had a Blu-ray market share of 47%. Regarding the overall package-media list, the
Insurgent and Divergent two-pack sold 14% as many total units as
Insurgent.
