Blu-ray Sales, July 27-Aug. 2: Home Settles Down at Number One

For the week that ended on August 2nd, DreamWorks Home Entertainment's Home took the number-one position on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This CGI-animated comedy struggled to earn back its production budget for the studio last March. It garnered mediocre critical support (the film has a 55% rating on Metacritic) and grossed only $176 million worldwide on top of its projected $135-million budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $209 million). This week, Home had a Blu-ray market share of 43%.

That said, Home certainly had a strong first week on home-media platforms; it dominated the sales rankings so that no other title came close. Case in point: the number-two-on-the-Blu-ray-only-charts feature, Warner Home Entertainment's newest direct-to-video option Justice League: Gods and Monsters, sold 11% as many Blu-rays as Home and 8% as many total units. Still, even though it couldn't top Home in sales - and fell to third place on the overall package-media chart, behind Fox's The Longest Ride - Gods and Monsters did have a stronger Blu-ray market share than Home did, reaching 64%.

Finally, the special "Rogue Cut" of X-Men: Days of Future Past rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only list. Director Bryan Singer's ambitious sci-fi blockbuster - it is simultaneously a prequel and sequel to the likes of X-Men: The Last Stand, The Wolverine, and X-Men: First Class - was a big success when it premiered last May; after receiving positive critical acclaim (it has a Metacritic score of 74%), the film grossed over $746 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Days of Future Past sold 5% as many Blu-rays as Home and had a good HD market share of 63%. Regarding the overall package-media chart, Days of Future Past came in eighth place - behind Fox's The Longest Ride, Gods and Monsters, Sony's Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Disney's DVD-only release of Descendants, and Warner's Get Hard & The Water Diviner, respectively - and sold 4% as many total units as Home.
