For the week that ended on July 26th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
The Longest Ride again took the number-one position on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director George Tillman Jr.'s adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel was a modest hit for the studio last April. Despite poor critical support (the film has a
33% rating on Metacritic), it grossed
almost $60 million worldwide on top of its projected $34-million budget. This week,
The Longest Ride had a Blu-ray market share of 24%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Sony's
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. This family-friendly comedy - a sequel to the 2009 surprise hit
Paul Blart: Mall Cop - was a decent success when it premiered last April; even though it lacked critical acclaim (it has a
Metacritic score of 13%), the film
grossed over $104 million worldwide on top of its estimated $30-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 sold 84% as many Blu-rays as
The Longest Ride (and had an HD market share of 32%) and 63% as many total units.
Finally, the special "Rogue Cut" of
X-Men: Days of Future Past rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only list. Director Bryan Singer's ambitious sci-fi blockbuster - it is simultaneously a prequel and sequel to the likes of
X-Men: The Last Stand,
The Wolverine, and
X-Men: First Class - was a big success when it premiered last May; after receiving positive critical acclaim (it has a
Metacritic score of 74%), the film
grossed over $746 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Days of Future Past sold 82% as many Blu-rays as
The Longest Ride and had a strong HD market share of 65%. Regarding the overall package-media chart,
Days of Future Past came in seventh place - behind eOne's
Wild Horses, Warner's
Get Hard and
Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery releases, and Lionsgate's
Ex Machina, respectively - and sold 30% as many total units as
The Longest Ride.
