For the week that ended on July 19th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
The Longest Ride took the number-one position on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director George Tillman Jr.'s adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel was a modest hit for the studio last April. Despite poor critical support (the film has a
33% rating on Metacritic), it grossed
almost $60 million worldwide on top of its projected $34-million budget. This week,
The Longest Ride had a Blu-ray market share of 24%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only rankings was another Fox release: the special "Rogue Cut" of
X-Men: Days of Future Past. Director Bryan Singer's ambitious sci-fi blockbuster - it is simultaneously a prequel and sequel to the likes of
X-Men: The Last Stand,
The Wolverine, and
X-Men: First Class - was a big success when it premiered last May; after receiving positive critical acclaim (it has a
Metacritic score of 74%), the film
grossed over $746 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Days of Future Past sold 96% as many Blu-rays as
The Longest Ride and had a strong HD market share of 75%. Regarding the overall package-media chart,
Days of Future Past came in fourth place - behind Sony's
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Lionsgate's
Ex Machina, respectively - and sold 31% as many total units as
The Longest Ride.
Finally,
Ex Machina rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists. Director Alex Garland's twisty sci-fi drama - his first film as a director after penning such features as
28 Days Later and
Sunshine - was a nice-sized hit on the indie market this year.
Ex Machina accrued fairly robust critical support (the film has a
78% rating on Metacritic), and it grossed
over $36 million worldwide on top of a projected $15-million budget. The picture sold 88% as many Blu-rays as
The Longest Ride (and had an HD market share of 57%) and 38% as many total units.
