For the week that ended on July 5th, Warner Home Entertainment's
Get Hard took the number-one position on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director Etan Cohen's raunchy comedy - adapted from a story idea by
Anchorman and
Step Brothers mastermind Adam McKay - was a modest hit for the studio last March; despite poor critical support (the film has a
34% rating on Metacritic), it grossed
over $90 million domestically on top of its projected $40-million budget. This week,
Get Hard had a Blu-ray market share of 31%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
Kingsman: The Secret Service. Director Matthew Vaughn's violent comic-book adaptation - from
The Secret Service by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons - was a surprise hit for the studio last February; despite middling critical support (the film has a
58% rating on Metacritic), it grossed
over $403 million worldwide on top of its projected $81-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Kingsman sold 30% as many Blu-rays as
Get Hard and had an HD market share of 31%. Regarding the overall package-media chart,
Kingsman sold 29% as many total units as
Get Hard.
Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Chappie rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only list. The third film from
District 9 director Neill Blomkamp,
Chappie struggled to make an impression with audiences last March. The sci-fi picture scored a
41% rating on Metacritic and earned just
$31.5 million domestically on top of its $49-million budget, though it did net an additional $70 million in international totals. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Chappie sold 25% as many Blu-rays as
Get Hard and had an HD market share of 46%. On the overall package-media chart,
Chappie came in seventh place - behind, respectively,
Last Knights,
American Sniper,
Despicable Me 2, and
Teen Beach 2 - and sold 17% as many total units as the Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart-starring comedy.
