For the week that ended on June 28th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
Kingsman: The Secret Service regained its number-one position on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director Matthew Vaughn's violent comic-book adaptation - from
The Secret Service by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons - was a surprise hit for the studio last February; despite middling critical support (the film has a
58% rating on Metacritic), it grossed
over $403 million worldwide on top of its projected $81-million budget. This week,
Kingsman had a Blu-ray market share of 35%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only ranking was Warner Home Entertainment's
American Sniper. Director Clint Eastwood's exploration of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle's experiences as a sniper in the Iraq War ranks as one of the iconic filmmaker's most successful pictures. The controversial feature - the film currently has a
72% score on Metacritic, and that number reflects some of the divisive critical attitudes - was one of 2014's highest grossing films in the United States, earning just
under $350 million domestically on top of its $58-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
American Sniper sold 94% as many Blu-rays as
Kingsman and had an HD market share of 42%. Regarding the overall package-media chart,
American Sniper sold 79% as many total units as
Kingsman.
Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Chappie rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists. The third film from
District 9 director Neill Blomkamp,
Chappie struggled to make an impression with audiences last March. The sci-fi picture scored a
41% rating on Metacritic and earned just
$31.5 million domestically on top of its $49-million budget, though it did net an additional $70 million in international totals. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Chappie sold 83% as many Blu-rays as
Kingsman and had an HD market share of 44%. On the overall package-media chart,
Chappie sold 66% as many total units as Matthew Vaughn's R-rated actioner.
