For the week that ended on June 7th, Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment's
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water took the number-one position on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Another feature-film iteration of the
popular Nickelodeon series - it follows the 2004
SpongeBob SquarePants Movie -
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was a solid earner for the studio following its February premiere. The animated feature scored a
62% rating on Metacritic and earned just
under $163 million domestically on top of its $74-million budget. This week,
Sponge Out of Water had a Blu-ray market share of 44%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's
Jupiter Ascending. The latest film from the Wachowski siblings,
Jupiter Ascending struggled to find the commercial success of the Wachowskis'
Matrix series or the cult following of the pair's ambitious postmodern epic
Cloud Atlas; the film got a
40% favorability score on Metacritic and only grossed
grossed $47 million domestically on top of its reported $176-million budget (that said, the picture performed better overseas, earning an additional $134 million). On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Jupiter Ascending sold 78% as many Blu-rays as
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and had a higher HD market share of 49%. On the overall package-media chart, the Wachowskis' sci-fi fantasy sold 71% as many total units as
Sponge Out of Water.
Finally, Warner's
American Sniper rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists. Director Clint Eastwood's exploration of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle's experiences as a sniper in the Iraq War ranks as one of the iconic filmmaker's most successful pictures. The controversial feature (the film currently has a
72% score on Metacritic, and that number reflects some of the divisive critical attitudes) was one of 2014's highest grossing films in the United States, earning just
under $350 million domestically on top of its $58-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
American Sniper sold 54% as many Blu-rays as
Sponge Out of Water and had a higher HD market share of 41%. Regarding the overall package-media chart,
Fifty Shades of Grey sold 58% as many total units as the
Spongebob sequel.
